Rose Mary Havlik (pictured) gave a short talk about quilts and clothing that were made from feed sacks long ago at the Shiner Heritage Quilters meeting on June 3rd. She is wearing a vintage bonnet made of feed sack material. At the business meeting Laura Kaspar collected quilts for Norma's House and Bernadette Kresta collected quilts for area nursing homes. Block-of-the-Month and Show and Tell followed. Then it was on to "fun and games" as thirty-five members enjoyed playing bingo and winning quilting supplies. Hostesses Barbara Michalec, Lillie Schumacher, Gladys Muehlstein and Marilyn Schroeder provided delicious refreshments and door prizes.

June 2025-- June workshop "Lecture" is postponed

MJ Kinman, textile artist and award-winning quilter who has shown her unique work in galleries, museums, and national juried competition, will give a lecture and trunk show at the Shiner Heritage Quilters meeting on Tuesday, June 3rd. She specializes in creating larger-than-life portraits of colored gemstones using fabric and paint. She has said, “When people ask me what I do, I like to tell them I make the biggest diamonds in the world…but instead of using the hardest substance on earth I use the softest—cloth!” Her website is mjkinman.com

Members gather at the Shiner Methodist Church Fellowship Hall around 5:30 to socialize and enjoy light refreshments. The meeting begins at 6:00 and includes block-of-the-month, show and tell and door prize drawings.

Attendees included thirty members and a new member, Barbara Michalec. Hostesses who provided refreshments and door prizes were Tommie Clayton, Linda Parr, Hope Cummins, and Diana Henk. The June 3rd meeting will feature a trunk show and lecture by MJ Kinman. Her quilts are outstanding and have been exhibited in galleries, national juried competition, and private collections.

April 2025

Vicki Woodard (left) and Deborah Bradley, who is the Managing Director of the Texas Quilt Museum in La Grange, presented a program about the museum at the April 1st meeting of the Shiner Heritage Quilters Guild. Deborah showed many slides of quilts from ancient to modern times. She explained how an historic building in La Grange, that once served as a furniture store, was transformed into the museum that opened in 2011. She told about the Koval Antique Textile Collection that is part of the Library and Material Culture Study Center at the museum. Vickie assisted and passed around framed pictures of historic fabrics.

At the meeting, quilts for Norma’s House and area nursing homes were collected, followed by Show and Tell. Hostesses Rae Nell Janak, Joyce Machicek, Nola Bohuslav and Kathleen Schacherl provided door prizes and delicious refreshments. The very first “Swap Meet” will be the focus of the May 6th meeting. Deborah Bradley, Managing Director of the Texas Quilt Museum in La Grange, will be the guest speaker at the Shiner Heritage Quilters meeting on Tuesday, April 1st. She will talk about the Koval Antique Textile Collection that is part of the Library and Material Culture Study Center at the museum. March 2025

Pictured from the left: Deane Novosad (Norma’s House Children’s Advocacy Center) Glady Seifert (Shady Oaks Nursing and Rehab Center-Moulton) and Methodist Pastor Darin Zumwalt (Shiner Food Pantry) who were guest speakers at the March 4th Shiner Heritage Quilters meeting. They talked about the good works of their organizations and thanked the guild for the quilts and money donations.

Thirty-four members and six guests attended the meeting. Hostesses Margo Henderson, Alice Janak, Lisa Stafford, and Helen Stafford had decorated each table with a colorful St. Patrick theme and provided delicious refreshments.

Bernadette Kresta collected 10 nursing home quilts and Laura Kaspar collected 14 Norma’s House quilts that were sewn by the members. Margo Henderson handed out the next “Block of the Month” pattern. The popular “Show and Tell” followed. The meeting ended with door prize drawings given by the hostesses. The next meeting is April 1st, and will feature a program on the Texas Quilt Museum.

February 2025

Quilts for Norma’s House and area nursing homes were collected and those who participated in the Block of the Month showed their completed blocks. After the business meeting everyone was entertained with a “Big Show and Tell” program featuring special quilts that members displayed. The meeting adjourned after the door prize drawings.

Margo Henderson handed out the "Block of the Month" information. She reported that the guild won third place in the Yoakum Heritage Annual Christmas Tree Forest exhibit. Quilts for Norma's House and area nursing homes were collected. The popular "Show and Tell" followed. Hostesses who provided refreshments and door prizes were Debbie Novosad, Annette Meyer, Linda Parr, Karin Filipp, and Darcy Curtin.

December 2024

Forty-two Shiner Heritage Quilters Guild members enjoyed a festive Christmas party on Tuesday, December 3rd at the Shiner Methodist Church Fellowship Hall. Wilma Williams and Brenda Fisseler chaired the event. Werner's catered a delicious meal of chicken parmesan and sides. Amy Kresta, owner of The Pickled Baker, baked scrumptious cakes for dessert.

The evening’s highlights were the drawings to win packets of Christmas blocks sewn by members using fabrics that were chosen by a committee. A lively game of gift-sharing followed. In the spirit of holiday giving, the guild gave a monetary gift to the Shiner Food Pantry at the Methodist Church.

Thirty-four members enjoyed the program presented by RaeNell Janik, Nola Bohuslav, and Darcy Curtin. They spoke about their recent trip to the Houston International Quilt Festival. Darcy gave a slide presentation of many of the beautiful quilts that were displayed.

Quilts for Norma’s House and area nursing homes were collected and various business items were discussed. Show and Tell followed. The meeting ended with door prize drawings provided by the hostesses: Carolyn Janak, Rose Mary Havlik, Janet Zabransky, Theresa Belicek, Bennie Gerdes, and Suzanne Sestak.

Shiner Heritage Quilters Guild Program Chair Darcy Curtin (left) is pictured with Michele Markey, owner of Medina Domestic Arts Studio, who was the guest speaker at the Tuesday, Sept. 3rd meeting. Markey presented a trunk show consisting of many beautiful painted fabric wall hangings and quilts. She described several methods for applying permanent coloring to fabric, using an embroidered pattern as a coloring guide. Sixteen members had signed up to take the Sept. 3rd all-day workshop that Markey offered. They proudly displayed their projects during “Show and Tell” at the evening meeting. The Guild presented a donation of $1,000 to the church in grateful appreciation for the use of the Fellowship Hall and Activity Center for meetings and the 2024 “Spring into Quilting” show. The presentation was made at the Guild’s annual summer dinner held at the church on July 2nd.

The Homes for Families at Bluebonnet Campus (near Yoakum), an affiliate of the STCH Ministries, received a charitable contribution of $650 from the Shiner Heritage Quilters Guild. Charitable contributions were also given to Community Connection of Lavaca County based in Hallettsville and both Moulton and Shiner Police Departments.

These gifts were made possible due to the outpouring of community support for the Guild’s donation quilt fundraiser that was held in conjunction with the “2024 Spring into Quilting” show held in March.

Shiner Heritage Quilters have stepped up to help caregivers during the COVID-19 Pandemic by using their quilt-making skills and fabric to sew face masks for use in area hospitals.

Shiner Heritage Quilters donation

Pictured are Shiner Heritage Quilters President Janet Ferguson along with First United Methodist Church Pastor Rob Clopton, his wife, Sandra; Church Secretary Mary Kristynik and her husband, Kenneth, who were honored guests at the Guild's summer dinner held at the church on July 2nd.

 

The Guild presented a donation to the church in appreciation for the opportunity to use the Fellowship Hall and Activity Center for meetings and the biennial "Spring into Quilting" shows.

 

The Guild meets the first Tuesday of the month at the Methodist Fellowship Hall. Members come from Shiner and surrounding area towns. Visitors and new members are always welcomed at the meetings.

The Quilt Car

 

The quilt was assembled from blocks donated by members and friends of Shiner Heritage Quilters. Five guild members spent more than 80 hours putting it together. Created to publicize our March 2009 quilt show, the quilt car has appeared in a number of parades since and at the International Quilt Festival in Houston.
